MILLS CANYON URN
2017
Mills, New Mexico
In northeastern New Mexico the Kiowa Grasslands stretch out for a hundred thousand acres. In the middle lies Mills Canyon, and the Canadian River, which brings it life. I spent ten days camped on the rim of the canyon. Each morning I got up with the sun and pulled my cart four miles to the build site I had chosen in a field of cacti far below on the canyon floor. I brought eighty pounds of clay in a four-wheel cart and thirty-five pounds of gear, mostly water, as the temperature would hit 120 degrees before I would pack up my tools and hike back out of the canyon to the slightly more forgiving grasslands.
The finished vessel was seven feet tall and weighed 500 pounds.
